This appointment establishes a stand-alone First Nations directorate for the first time at Victoria Legal Aid. The creation of the First Nations Services directorate elevates First Nations leadership while providing clear governance mechanisms for all our First Nations projects and initiatives. This is critical in the context of the recommendations of the Yoorrook Justice Commission, and on the path to Treaty in Victoria.

Ashley will continue to provide the strong leadership he demonstrated in the director First Nations role. This includes on service design and delivery that prioritises culture, acknowledges trauma and supports healing, addresses racism and promotes cultural safety, aligned with the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework enablers of self-determination.

Prior to joining Victoria Legal Aid, Ashley was at the Children’s Court of Victoria where he was the manager of Koori Services and Programs. In this role he led the development and delivery of the Children’s Court self-determination plan and effective delivery and expansion of Koori services and programs within the Children’s Court. Prior to this, he held the position of Koori Services coordinator at the Broadmeadows Children’s Court where he led the development and implementation of the Marram-Ngala Ganbu Koori Family Hearing Day, an Australian first, court-based culturally informed hearing day in child protection for First Nations communities.

Please join us in congratulating Ashley on his appointment which he takes up on Monday 18 November.
