Legal Help Chat is staffed by trained officers who are not lawyers. They can provide you with legal information or refer you to other services for help. If your enquiry is understood to be more complex, we may suggest you call and speak to one of our staff. We may monitor the chat and use your email address to send you a survey to improve our service.
You have the option of providing our organisation with your phone number, but it is not compulsory. We use this to provide a better service to you. With your phone number we can locate any previous information you may have given us, which will help us understand your legal issue.
Privacy laws in Victoria permit us to ask for this information if it means we can provide you a better service. We will never share this information with anyone other than our employees. You are still able to receive legal information if you do not want to give our organisation your phone number, however we will be unable to transfer you to a lawyer for phone advice. It may also mean that you have to repeat information you have already provided.
We value your privacy and have a duty to keep your information confidential. We collect the minimum information needed to both help you and meet our legal obligations. When we ask you for personal information, we will tell you how we will use it. We also collect and store your server address (IP address) which is necessary for you to access this service.
