Invoicing for legal aid work by barristers

Learn about the process for barristers to invoice us directly for legal aid work they have completed.

Barristers will sometimes need to invoice us directly for legal aid work they have completed. This is when VLA directly briefs a barrister, not when other practitioners brief them. This can include for file work and duty work.

We are introducing a new process for how these invoices are to be submitted for payment. All invoices are to be sent to central email inbox for each office, which can also be found on the updated backsheets.

This process does not apply to private practitioners who have briefed a barrister.

Invoices will need to include a VLA Reference number on all invoices, using the following format:

  • File Related: clients name_date of appearance_lawyers initials_practice file number.
  • Capacity/PPSSS Briefing: CB or PPSSS_court list_date of appearance_contact name.

All invoices need to be submitted to Victoria Legal Aid within 30 days of the date of appearance, and must have attached an endorsed backsheet and copy of the email sent to Lawyers with outcome of appearance (if not included on backsheet).

This change aims to alleviate payment issues and assist us to ensure all invoices are processed in a timely manner, aligning with our compliance practices.
