New invoicing process to support payments for barristers briefed by Victoria Legal Aid

We’re improving our systems to ensure the efficiency and security of our invoice payment processes for barristers who have been briefed directly by VLA to do legal aid work. To support this, we’ve established a new procedure for processing invoices.

This is only for when we have briefed a barrister to do work, such as duty lawyer work through our capacity briefing program, and does not apply to barristers who have been briefed by panel practitioners.

Panel practitioners who are briefing barristers do not need to adopt this process.

All invoices from barristers briefed by VLA are now to be sent to central email inbox for each office, which are available on Invoicing for legal aid work by barristers and on the updated backsheets.

Invoices must include a VLA Reference number on all invoices, using the following format:

  • File Related: clients name_date of appearance_lawyers initials_practice file number.
  • Capacity/PPSSS Briefing: CB or PPSSS_court list_date of appearance_contact name.

All invoices need to be submitted to Victoria Legal Aid within 30 days of the date of appearance, and must have attached an endorsed backsheet and copy of the email sent to Lawyers with outcome of appearance (if not included on backsheet).

This change aims to alleviate payment issues and assist us to ensure all invoices are processed in a timely manner, aligning with our compliance practices.
